On arrival at Achill, we were allocated our bikes and told to take a few moments to get used to them by cycling them around a large carpark at the back of hotel where the storage container was situated. Wind conditions and weather estimations for the day were also explained to us before we were led to our bus to make the 30 minute or so journey out to Achill Sound. We arrived at the Westport town shop around 9:20am on Wednesday morning to a friendly greeting and introduction to the Greenway route via the explanation of a map. After reading several reviews and contacting Clew Bay Bike Hire directly to enquire - we decided the easiest way to complete the route would be to get a shuttle out to Achill and cycle back to Westport with the wind on our backs. My husband booked the standard Adult Male bike, while I opted for the Electric bike. You simply select the type of bikes you would like to hire and whether or not you require a shuttle for the journey. We booked online which was very quick and pretty straightforward. That, coupled with the wide range of bikes available for all levels of both fitness and ability as well as the shuttle services offered were a no brainer for us while making our booking! Our trip to beautiful Westport would not have been complete without involving ourself in some activity and after reading rave reviews about Clew Bay Bike Hire - we decided to set ourselves the task of cycling the Greenway!Īs a person still very much in the early stages of recovery from foot surgery, what I found most appealing about hiring from here was the fact that they offer to pick you up at points along the way should you feel you are not quite up to the task. Seven months ago - I underwent reparative surgery on my foot and have been slowly but surely regaining my strength and more importantly rediscovering my love of outdoor activities. I suffer from a rare joint disease which severely restricted the use of my right foot for almost two years.
We have just arrived home from our mid-week trip to Westport and I could not wait to share the experience we had cycling the Great Western Greenway.įirst let me start by explaining that although my husband and I love the outdoors, deciding to cycle the Greenway was probably one of the biggest physical challenges I have set myself to date.
